Safety Data Sheet (SDS) - Nitrous Oxide E942

1. Identification

  • Product name: Nitrous oxide, compressed (food grade)
  • Chemical formula: N2O
  • CAS number: 10024-97-2
  • EC number: 233-032-0
  • Food additive: E942
  • UN number: UN 1070
  • Supplier: Ronghai Industrial Co., Ltd. (sales@dzrjyl.com)

2. Hazards Identification

Oxidizing gas (Category 1) and gas under pressure (compressed / liquefied). Supports combustion vigorously. Contact with liquid phase can cause cryogenic burns. Intentional inhalation is dangerous and may cause rapid loss of consciousness or death due to oxygen displacement; high or repeated exposure may affect the nervous system.

  • Signal word: Warning
  • H270: May cause or intensify fire; oxidizer
  • H280: Contains gas under pressure; may burst if heated
  • Keep away from oils, greases and organic materials

3. Composition / First Aid

Component: nitrous oxide > 99.95% (food grade). Inhalation exposure: move person to fresh air immediately; give oxygen if trained; seek medical attention. Skin/eye contact with discharging gas: thaw frozen clothing with lukewarm water and obtain medical advice. Do not induce vomiting if ingestion-related discomfort occurs.

4. Fire-Fighting & Accidental Release

  • Use water spray to cool cylinders exposed to fire; cylinders are fitted with pressure relief
  • Do not extinguish surrounding fire until the gas source is safely closed
  • Ventilate the area; eliminate ignition sources and combustible materials
  • Wear self-contained breathing apparatus in confined or fire situations

5. Handling & Storage

Use only with food-service equipment designed for N2O chargers or cylinders. Never use adapters to force a cylinder into an incompatible device. Store in cool, dry, ventilated conditions below 50 deg C, upright, separated from flammable gases and combustibles. Full and empty packages should be segregated and rotated by lot date.

6. Exposure Controls & Physical Properties

  • Appearance: Colourless gas, slightly sweet odour
  • Boiling point: -88.5 deg C at 1.013 bar
  • Relative density (gas): 1.53 (air = 1)
  • Vapour pressure (20 deg C): Approx. 51 bar
  • Solubility in water: Approx. 1.5 g/L at 20 deg C
  • Occupational limit: Follow local OEL for inert asphyxiants; ensure ventilation
  • Stability: Stable in food-service use; decomposes only at very high temperature

7. Toxicological / Ecological / Disposal

Not classified for acute environmental toxicity. Do not discharge large quantities into confined spaces. Dispose of cylinders through qualified gas companies; do not incinerate sealed chargers or cylinders. Empty chargers are recyclable steel where accepted.

8. Transport / Regulatory

UN 1070, Nitrous oxide, Class 2.2, subsidiary hazard 5.1 (oxidizing). Packing instructions P200 (cylinders). Transport upright, secured, with valve caps fitted. Food-grade quality complies with EU E942 purity criteria and 21 CFR 184.1545.
